What is 1 South 19 West (1S 19W)?
1 South 19 West is a reference to a Township survey created in 1826 by deputy surveyors for the Federal Government Land Office (GLO). Township surveys were created by the Federal Government to identify land and features within an area that is 6 miles by 6 miles square. A monument is located in Tallahassee to identify the point of origin for the Tallahassee Baseline and Meridian. The term "1 South" refers to the location of this particular grid as being the first Township below, or south, of the Tallahassee Baseline. The term "19 West" refers to the location of this grid as being 19 townships (about 114 miles @ 19 x 6) west of the Tallahassee Meridian.
Why is there a 1 South 19 West website?
In the summer of 2005, a family living within the boundaries of Township 1 South Range 19 West faced heavy equipment attempting to destroy portions of fence, gardens, and a wooded section of their property. A new "neighbor" claimed to own land that included the family's home & business locations, and a legal battle ensued. Since the initial confrontation, the family struggled to understand the hows and whys of the disputed boundary situation. Subsequent years of research have revealed a history of disputes and litigation within their township, throughout all of Walton County, and in other counties within the State of Florida. For clarity of the issues, the focus and facts will be strictly on the immediate area of Township 1 South 19 West.
The cause of boundary confusion originates from faulty actions of the State of Florida and associated government agencies tasked with primary disposal of public lands granted by the Federal Government for the creation of public schools and raising of revenue for the State. Subsequent actions taken by the State of Florida and its' acting agent of Walton County are indicative of an elaborate constructive fraud on the citizens of the area, whether intentional or unintentional. The fraud undermines the intent of Congress, violates the Constitutional Rights of the family involved, and affects every property owner living within the public lands of the State of Florida.
This website represents a compilation of research since 2005 in an effort not only to remedy the situation for the family, but to educate the public on the issue of the destruction of public lands to prevent further chaos from happening to the public at large in all states that use the TRS surveying system. The goal will allow Walton County and the State of Florida to correct past errors, and to protect Federally protected land rights of citizens that reside within the state .
